Hello to anyone and everyone that reads this! Hope it’s a few haha :]
I cant express in words how blessed I am. I get to wake up ever morning, open my patio door to a cool breeze and African sun. Unfortunately though, my mornings are sometimes ruined by the unbelievably awful stench of seaweed…but I mean I live next to the ocean, so no complaining on my part! I hope all of yall are happy and well. Everyone keeps asking me if I miss home yet…and honestly my answer is always negative! Haha sorry yall. But c’mon it’s only been a month…and I’m sure your reading this not surprised at all. Plus my family is off having fun in Florida…Eric may be going skiing this week with the guys… Nanny is busy planning their trip and I’m sure Pop’s out at the ranch fiddlin with something so I’m sure they don’t miss me just yet either! I’ve successfully introduced many people here to Texas Country and I’m counting down the days until I bust out all my rangers gear and let them get a feel for the Texas Rangers fanatic side of me. 23 DAYS PEOPLE!!! This will be the first opening day I haven’t been to in a few years. & First season EVER that I will completely miss. But my friend Clark who is living out here about a hour away in Stellenbosch has found a website we can watch all the games on for free so thank you Lord you heard our prayers. I am wearing a Rangers shirt everyday for the week of April 6th(opening day for all you losers out there who don’t watch baseball) haha just kidding…. but really!
Well in two days we will have officially been here for a month. Crazy how time fly’s! So far everything is still going great just going with the flow each and every day. Last night I went and saw the movie Safe House with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. It was filmed here in Cape Town so it was cool to watch it and know some of the places they were at. Apparently before we arrived here there were many sightings of Ryan down the road from Living Hope at some café.
Yesterday Jennifer made it a point to say that she finally feels like were a part of this family here. I would definitely have to agree. One of the girls, Meagan, who is actually our head team leader out in Capricorn has for some strange reason begun calling us Texas Rangers. I obviously don’t mind it but I’m glad were all comfortable with each other to just mess around and be funny. Also yesterday while I was in a meeting about disaster relief in townships I came back to my phone missing. I work with some pranksters…. if only they knew how I work :]
IM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS WEEKEND! We are taking a long break and going away for 4 days. It’s the volunteer’s retreat and were all going to pile into a few cars and drive down the garden route, which is known to be absolutely beautiful. Then were setting up camp in Heroldsbay, which is a small town about 5 hours east of here.
Dont worry, these signs are on EVERY beach around here. Great whites are notorious for hanging out here. But i've brushed up on my shark knowledge. Thank you Shark Week...
I am trying SO hard to not finish my Hunger Games book because I want to have something to read while I hang out on the beach but I’m in the 3rd book and its just too good to put down. So the next few days I will be sitting on the beach, trying not to get sunburn and just enjoying peoples company.
It will be nice getting away from work for a few days. I am now involved in so many things I don’t even know what they are. EVERY time I am in Avril’s office I leave with a new task. And when I walk back to where we all hang out they just laugh and tell me I’ve been “Avrill’d” I’ve been here a month and yesterday in the disaster relief meeting I had to introduce myself to the other NGO’s that came to the meeting and I said hey I’m Shelby, I work with living hope and I am an Life skills educator out in Capricorn…I am working to build the OVC program…I am the administrator of the new Men’s Outreach committee. Then later that afternoon Avrill asked if I would become in charge of the resource room! She made it sound like a deal because she kept saying I would get my own desk. Haha what a mess but got to love her. Anyways for all yall that just thought I was coming here for a vacation….you were greatly mistaken! When I get home at night, which is usually around 5, I just want to sit and not be social. Which is SOO unlike me for all yall that know me. But I love everything about this place so I just go with the flow.
This was my verse for today and I think it absolutely fits what my days lately have been like. It amazes me how God always knows what you need to see to know he is working in you and with you through each and every day.
“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
2 Peter 1:5-8
Count your blessings
