So this past week has been quite eventful...might be my most memorable experience yet. && it all has to do with South Africa's wonderful wildlife.
&& from the get go...I do understand this is pretty much all my fault.
enjoy my story.
Since it is winter here, days mostly consist of clouds and rain. I don't mind it at all because I love cold weather and rain is always good. Well this past week the weather has been pretty awesome. Well on Wednesday I was home and had washed some clothes so I had them hanging on our rack...yes, we don't have dryers here. Anyways since it was a nice day and the sun was shining I opened our sliding door that is in our room and put my clothes by the door so they could be in the sun and hopefully dry faster.
Just a visual so you can understand.
okay view of my room from the bathroom door. So like I said I had that back door open to let my clothes dry. I went into our bathroom and started getting ready for Kids Club that afternoon. Usually we aren't home during the day so us being here at this time was not normal but Jennifer had been sick all last week and I hadn't been feeling great either so we took it easy in the mornings. ANYWAYS as I'm in my bathroom straightening my hair, I get this sudden urge to go close the door. no idea why...but it wasn't that persuasive because I continued on with my hair. Not even 1-2 minutes later something walks by the bathroom door towards the door that goes into the living room. It was one of those moments where you glance over...see something...your mind doesn't really register then BAM you turn your head so fast its almost whip lash to make sure you didn't just see what you thought you did. I remember my first thought was what in the world! how did a dog get into our yard?? (its completely fenced by a good 6ft fence. Then I came to my senses to see that it was a big dog...it was indeed a huge..and I mean huge..alpha male BABOON. It had walked through the door...through our room..passed me in the bathroom like I wasn't there and went out into the living room. I froze. I had no idea what to do because these things can be very dangerous, especially the males. They could easily tear me to shreds and send me to the hospital. So once he gets past me I shut the bathroom door. Now one thing you may be wondering is what was Jennifer doing during this traumatizing 1 minute of my life. Right when I shut the door that thought came into my head and I'm not going to lie...I put my ear up to the door in hopes that I would get to hear her reaction. awful I know...but if you know me in the slightest this wouldn't surprise you. Now the last time I saw Jennifer she was laying on the couch in the living room so I thought surely she see's it. You cant leave our room and not be seen in the living room....it's impossible.
Here's the living room...and I thought Jennifer was laying on the white couch by the window. the door to our room is by this other with couch. So not hearing a quick reaction made me confused. Then I started running different scenarios in my head and I lost it. I was laughing hysterically and she hadn't even seen the monkey yet. Well I heard someone on the stairs. I thought this is it! She's going to walk down the stairs and be greeted by this thing. But little did I know...it was the baboon I heard on the stairs. Jennifer was actually upstairs and when she heard the stairs squeak. Yeah you can't go unnoticed on those things. She told me she was about to walk down but heard someone coming and obviously thought it was me. To her absolute surprise she was greeted by a big baboon. She said she froze and it looked at her and kept walking into the kitchen. That is when I heard the screams!! I heard screaming followed by my name as well as baboon all jumbled up into a sentence. Also the running of feet down the stairs. By this point I had fallen to the ground from laughing so hard. It was quite possibly the best thing I've ever been a part of. We cautiously walked up the stairs and it was opening the fridge..the cabinets..eating food like it was his own. ridiculous. But the scary part was when we looked up there again and it was gone. We were just waiting for it to jump from the rafters and pounce on us...but thankfully it found its way out through the bathroom window.
Baboons 2. US 0.
here is the man of the hour and the mess he left.
this is right outside the bathroom window. He's sitting on the roof that covers our patio.
he brought the bag of granola for the road.
&& our kitchen after he helped himself. This time around he ate Jennifer's food. Last time they got ahold of all mine.
&& two days later he returned with accomplices.
Want to hear something absolutely fascinating. The guy that we rent our cars from, Archie, well where he lives the baboons are really bad. He actually keeps a paintball gun by his door to shoot them when they come around which is almost everyday. Anyways he said that these things are getting really smart. They've learned from watching I guess...that when you knock on the front door it gets opened. The dang monkeys have realized that and have been KNOCKING ON PEOPLES DOORS!! no joke. && when they open the door to see who it is they run in. ridiculous! Another thing he said is that at Cape Point, which is a big touristy place here, well the baboons are bad there too and through observation has seen that car doors open after you hear the beep. So when your walking to your door you click your button to unlock it and cars here have this beep. Anyways they hang around cars and when they hear the beep they OPEN THE CAR DOOR and get inside before the people get to their car.
haha it's unbelievable and a bit nerve racking.
ohh monkeys.
Now we thought our fun for the week was over but Thursday there was a holiday... Women's Day I think, they have so many random holidays. Anyways Living Hope graciously gave us Friday off too so we had a long awesome weekend. Friday we went to the World Of Birds and it was AWESOME! It was Tammy, Danielle, Jennifer and myself. When we were in the car driving there I let them know that when it comes to stuff like this..zoo's, aquariums, whatever I am like a little child and have to look at everything and touch it even if im not supposed to. So this was absolutely the best ever. It didn't only have birds...it had some other animals and the best part is that instead of like a zoo where you walk around and look at the animals in the cage...you could GO IN THE CAGE! I know...I was freaking out with excitement.
Such a cool place and I will absolutely go back before I leave here. Jennifer kept making fun of me because she kept saying I thought I was communicating with the animals because I would say one thing to it!
but here are some pictures of our fun!!
black swan
tortoise
the monkey part was my favorite. they were soo cute.
this guy jumped on my head and messed up my hair.
me and a meerkat bonding and becoming friends..

these owls literally watched my every move. kinda made me a bit nervous
&& this guy was awesome. I wanted to get closer but again...he made me nervous too
best. day. ever!!
&& to end our weekend of fun, Sunday after church we went bowling with the guys. It was Jennifer and myself then Ivan, Brenden, Holden && William.
the first game I got 2nd...then the second game I came back and got 1st!
whoop.
I went bowling in my boots and it was awesome!
Holden getting a strike..
then Jennifer got a strike..
Then I complained for not getting a strike.
After bowling the guys let their inner child out and played some games.
white boy Holden can't dance.
Brenden however had obviously done this before
&& yes that was my life these past few days! Hope everyone back home is happy and healthy! about 2 and a half more months till I am back home in Texas! Can't believe it...but getting excited.
